Would you believe it?

As Damian says, "Cool":

Researchers compost old mobile phones & transform them into flowers

"Researchers at the University of Warwick's Warwick Manufacturing
Group, in conjunction with PVAXX Research & Development Ltd, have
devised a novel way to recycle discarded mobile telephones - bury them
and watch them transform into the flower of your choice."

Leaving Care Mentoring Team

I've been sent the following which is thoroughly deserved:

At
the Princes Trust Celebrate Success event last night, Lee McDaid,
Project Manager of the Leaving Care Service Mentorting Project won the
Partner of the Year Award. The award is given to organisations that
have made an outstanding contribution to the work of the Princes Trust.
The citation read: " The Leaving Care Service in Lewisham has been a
partner in delivering The Princes Trust Mentoring for careleavers
programme since 1999 and was one of the first to pilot the initiative.
Since then over 90 careleavers have benefitted from one to one
mentoring support and 90 volunteers from the local community have each
received 30 hours training with on going support from Project Manager,
Lee McDaid"

In addition to this award, a Lewisham
care leaver, Safete Krasniqi, was a finalist for the Princes Trust
Young Achiever of the Year. The award is given to a young person who
through deternimation, endeavour and self belief has overcome their own
problems and made a difference in their local community. Safete came to
this country during the Kosovan war and and through her determination
gained the necessary qualification for university entry.Safete is now
supported by the Leaving Care Service in her second year
at Greenwich University reading Accountancy. During her
summer vacation in 2004, the Leaving Care Service Careers Advisers
obtained an internship for her with Bloomberg (City financial
firm) which she successfully completed.  She has contributed to
the Take Care, Take Control, a HAZ funded project promoting health for
looked after young people in Lewisham. She has had a mentor herself and
is now a peer mentor  for the Lewisham Leaving Care Peer Mentoring
scheme (currently funded by CAMHS grant). She is a peer mentor to a
younger careleaver. Safete also provides invaluable interpreting
services for her local community. She is an inspirational model to her
peers and an example of success for the looked after system in Lewisham.

I've been to a number of events where the mentors and young care
leavers have talked about their experiences and it's thoroughly
inspriational stuff, with both adults and young people gaining from the
experience.  I think I'm right in saying that I worked with Safete
a couple of years ago when I helped a group of young people in care do
a presentation about the importance of education in the lives of young
people in care to a group of councillors and officers.  She was,
and clearly is still, a remarkable woman.

Turning on the lights

Some pictures from this evening's entertainment.

Personally I thought the Elvis was a nice touch, but as you can see I
wasn't close enough to judge authenticity, which was also true for the
dignitaries, although Gavin Moore sounded real, as did Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Congratulations to the BVTA for once again creating the opportunity for a community event in the Village.

Walking Forum

There's going to be a meeting of the Lewisham Walking Forum on Wednesday 8th December at
the Civic Suite in Lewisham, they're starting at 6.30 pm.

I mention it because I know that they are looking for volunteers to help think about the planning for next year.

If you want further information about the Forum then get in touch with Jenny Budd (020 7188 2838).

There's also a document that's been produced looking back at the
Lewisham Walking Festival last year, and if you look very hard you'll
be able to see some dodgy photos of me.

The State of the Borough

I've just been reading a piece
of research that the Council has commissioned to help with policy development
and thought I'd share some of the bullet points from it.

  • Lewisham
is the 63rd most productive local economy in Great Britain
  • Lewisham
ranks 190th for economic growth in Great Britain (there has been
employment growth of 6%, which is above the national and regional average,
but slightly below that for London East).
  • Against
national averages Lewisham has a strong overall economic performance
profile.  The borough sits in either
the first, or high up the second, quartile for most measures of economic
    scale, productivity and growth.

  • Lewisham
ranks 24th for business and enterprise out of the 408 British
    local authorities

  • Lewisham
has a well educated workforce, ranking 98th for education and
skills out of the 408 British local authorities.

  • Unemployment
and long-term unemployment rates should be of some concern – ranking 16th
    and 29th highest in Britain,
7th and 14th respectively in London and third on both accounts in
    London East.
  • An
exceptionally high proportion of females work full time in the borough
    (the third highest in Britain,
London, and London East), conversely a high
proportion of males work part time (75th highest nationally, 7th
    in London
    and 4th in London East).

  • Lewisham
has an average age of 35 years (which, coincidentally, is how old I am.)
  • The
resident population of Lewisham increased by 6% over the decade 1991 –
    2002.
  • Lewisham
is the 15th most ethnically diverse local authority in Britain.
  • The
average household size in the borough is 2.3, below national, regional and
    sub-regional averages.  We have lots
of one-person households (33rd highest in Britain)
and couples without dependent children (also 33rd).
  • Lewisham
ranks 42nd for its proportion of resident knowledge workers, 38th
for people working in professional occupations, and 17th for
those working in associate professional and technical occupations.
  • Lewisham
is the 139th most prosperous local authority in Britain, but is also the 57th
most deprived local authority in England.
  • Average
life expectancy is 77 years (353rd in Britain).  We have comparatively high infant
    mortality rates (34th).

  • In
terms of crime, Lewisham is safer than London
and London East, but is much less safe than Britain as a whole (56th
    out of 376 English authorities).

  • Lewisham
is the 233rd most affordable local authority in England and Wales.
  • Lewisham
has one of the lowest proportions of people in the country travelling to
work by car; the 9th highest proportion travelling to work by
public transport, but a low proportion walking or cycling.

  • Lewisham
has a high standard of local amenities, ranking 36th of the 408
    British local authorities.  The
standard of local services is less impressive ranking 294th of
English local authorities (services take account of school results,
recycling performance, the cleanliness of highways and CPA results).

We’re having a presentation on this document at the Mayor’s
Board on Wednesday so I’ll be interested to hear what my colleagues and the
officers have to say.  I’m slightly
surprised about the poor services in the last bullet, but accept that we don’t have
a good record on recycling as yet, and notice that the cleanliness of the
streets figure was taken from 1999-00 so that may have changed.

Nevertheless, I think it provides an interesting and useful
benchmark for the borough and will be very helpful in developing some of the
policies that will be important for the coming years.

Via Casino Avenue I see that the Guardian has a piece about the pay of local journalists, and there's a mention of one of our local papers, the News Shopper.  Roy Greenslade makes the general point about the pay of local journalists:

"Many young people on
local weeklies and regional evening and daily papers are being badly
paid, and usually by companies which are racking up enormous profits.
Indeed, a number of trained, experienced journalists are also suffering
from poor pay.

"Many
young journalists earn £12,000 - some even less - and there are older
journalists who have finished their training getting £19,000."

He then goes on to make specific reference to the News Shopper:

"At Newsquest's News Shopper in south London reporters were once so
hard up they began dodging rail fares. When their editor found out he
was livid, telling them it undermined his famous shop-a-yob campaign.
Wages improved after an agreement between management and the NUJ, but a
new dispute has broken out after journalists claimed management had
reneged on the deal. A strike vote was carried al most unanimously. I
sought an official view but Andrew Parks, the editor, did not return my
call."
